A graduate of Edinburgh College of Art in the 1980s, Richard has been making and selling drawings, paintings, and prints ever since. In addition, he has run art workshops in 2D and 3D media as well as teaching art to adults and children.
In his own practice, Richard works mainly in oils but also produces watercolours, prints, drawings, and sculptures. Richard’s earlier work was inspired by his travels in the Middle East. He produced paintings of a wide range of local scenes and landscapes selling originals as well as a range of limited edition prints of this work.
More recently, Richard has drawn inspiration from the Cornish landscape and the stories associated with it. He enjoys the challenge of ‘Plein air’ painting and can often be found painting outside in all weathers. Many different factors can affect the outcome when making images in this way.Richard also produces woodcut prints and enjoys the physical process of cutting the wood to reveal the image; the final image remaining a mystery until the block is printed.
‘What I like about making art is the shift from a blank canvas to the finished piece. It’s about the journey as much as the destination.’Richard has work in collections across the world and is currently exhibiting throughout the South West at a variety of venues and as a member of Gwynngala.
